Wen-Bin has a dual specialization as composer/cellist, holding a Diploma with Distinction in Composition from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) under Dr. Zechariah Goh, and currently working towards his BA(Hons) in Cello Performance, also from NAFA, under the guidance of former SSO principal cellist Mrs. Herminia Ilano. He maintains that composition is an important, and all too often overlooked, aspect of making music.

Currently associate principal cellist of the NAFA Orchestra as well as resident cellist with the NAFA Chinese Ensemble, Wen-Bin has performed with symphony orchestras, string ensembles, Chinese orchestras, symphonic bands, and chamber groups of various sizes and instrumentations as orchestral musician, chamber musician, and soloist. In February 2009, he was the only composition student to take part in the NAFA-Music Essentials Concerto Competition. In June the same year, he played solo cello with the Sembawang Wind Orchestra under the baton of Mr. Desmond Ng, in a performance of Tolga Kashif’s The Queen Symphony. He also frequently performs and arranges music for the independent string group FUSED.

As a composer, Wen-Bin is active in the modern music scene, having helped to premiere, perform and record countless compositions by his peers. His most notable modern music performance was with the Magnetic Band in August 2007, playing Tan Dun’s Ghost Operaand Peter Maxwell-Davies’s Eight Songs for a Mad King. His compositions have thrice won the Singapore National Youth Orchestra Young Composers’ Competition since its inauguration in 2003 – 2nd prize in 2003 and 1st prize in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, his composition Introduccion y Zapateado for solo double bass and strings was performed by the Dunman High School String Ensemble under Ms. Marietta Ku, with bassist Gan Liying playing solo.

Unbeknownst to many, Wen-Bin is also a metalhead (he also plays bass guitar). He maintains a close relationship to the melodic death metal band Abyssal, with whom he has guest-performed twice, on cello and keyboards.

Wen-Bin teaches cello and theory (with an unusual specialization in high grades) on a part-time basis, and is also the section instructor for Dunman High School Symphonic Band’s fledgling cello section. In his free time, he enjoys gaming, trying to play music which is beyond his abilities, and writing truly unique music.
